KITE: CALL TO ARTISTS

Call to Artists: 

We are considering art and ideas for our upcoming exhibition “KITE” presented by Studio@620 in St Petersburg, Fl. Opening -TBA 

The show will be co-curated by Fahan Sky McDonagh & Drayton Callison. KITE will be a collection of experiences throughout the duration of the show from the opening event, to kite building workshops, a kite fly in the park, a poetry night and more.

 What is a Kite: a light frame covered with some thin material, to be flown in the wind at the end of a long string.

But could it be more than that?

A kite seems to live at the edge of a dream. There is a bit of magic in this connection between sky and earth. That magic is experienced through kiting.

Conceptually, a kite can conjure childhood nostalgia, a feeling of lightness or a moment of Zen for the flyer. What is a kite to YOU? We are searching for artists who want to experiment with the notion of a kite, the materiality that is possible/or impossible, the emotional response to the experience, what lies at the edge of a dream.

All forms of art and materials will be considered: fabric, paper, ceramic, concrete, steel, glass, photography, performance, painting, drawing, poetry, video, etc.

Artist’s Submission info:

Each artist may submit up to two pieces for consideration. Several shots of each piece may be submitted to accurately portray your work. If a new idea will be built for the show, we will need a written description and drawing with dimensions. The following info must be included with each submitted piece:

1. Artist name along with any collaborating artists.
2. Title of piece
3. A short description of piece
4. Dimensions and year made.
5. Suggested Retail Value

 

*Selected artists will also be asked to submit an artist bio/statement and a head or working shot for promotional purposes.

Please email submissions to us both with KITE SUBMISSION in the subject line by June 2020 for consideration.

The show will run for 3- 4 weeks until the closing party TBA

Selected artists are responsible for transport to and from the gallery. All artworks must arrive with a paid return label for shipping. All local submissions will have to pick up after the closing of the show-TBA.

Chosen works may be available for sale or just for show. A 40% commission will be granted to the gallery upon the sale of any available work.

Summer in Seattle

This summer, I had the amazing fortune to do a residency with a new kiln in the home studio of my best friend, Karen Mahardy. Her studio is located in Greenwood, Seattle. It was a long time coming from the design and build out by Eddie Bernard, to the delivery from east to west coast, to the studio electricity, etc. All in all, I watched from Florida while Karen realized her dream. It was quite inspiring. When she asked me to be there for the test firings, how could I say no? We helped each other trouble shoot all of our questions in graduate school at RIT back in 2011-13. I am thankful to have made such an amazing connection.

Anyway, we broke some glass, broke some moulds, sourced our weird materials, had glass shipped up from bullseye and installed the kiln program to the app. It was all down hill from there. Karen and I had challenges at every firing but by the end of 2 weeks, we had it down. These are some of pieces that I made during my time there. They are currently on view at Shoreline in Seattle and in the new year moving to a new show in Albany, California curated by Tali Grinshpan.

Hot Glass and Lava: from Jewelry to Sculpture

Over the past few years, my secret love of geology has come to light. My interests in science stem from to my outdoor lifestyle as a child and my passion to care for the environment. I chose lava after several years of failed attempts with other stones that were incompatible with the borosilicate glass. Lava is silica based, light weight, porous and can withstand the high temperature of this process. 

Initially, I made a series of jewelry to sketch out forms and experiment with the process. Most recently, I have begun a series of  larger pieces that are wrapped in several layers of glass. For me lava is a symbol of the earth and creation. The glass represents a field of energy, a fragile layer of protection for nature. In a moment of presence, I hope to convey a oneness between the earth and the viewer. Ultimately, these pieces are about connection–physically and conceptually.
